Background on Interview
The fabulous author Elizabeth Stark (Shy Girl, Farrar, Straus, Giroux) interviewed me in my home for Curve Magazine. She started off the interview with a bang, saying she thought my book was a contender for the 'great American novel.' Whoosh. How does one respond to a statement like that? In my case, not too well. I said things like, well, actually my intentions for this book were very small, even if my passions for it were very big. Then finally she got an answer out of me (when my caffiene kicked in) which my sound engineer, M.T. Karthik, later plucked from 20 minutes into the interview (excerpted above as the clip titled "A Lesbian Voice"). At that point I describe my vision of what could be unique about a lesbian writer's voice. I refer to Ali Liebegott's book, The Beautifully Worthless , as my inspiration for this vision, not my own book. Soon I felt less shy and we started having fun. Elizabeth asked me a question I loved; it provoked my favorite part of the interview. She said, "Girl, your main character, is a thief. What did you steal to write this novel?" I loved answering that. Overall the interview was a great experience. Elizabeth was on her way to Europe the next day; her girlfriend came by to pick her up--and the three of us had shots of some 10-year-old scotch to celebrate. And voila, it was over! It will be appearing in the February 2005 issue.
